Machu Picchu

Machu Picchu meaning ‘Old Peak’ was built around the year 1460 in classical Inca style; the site is 80 km northwest of Cuzco. Machu Picchu probably is the most familiar symbol of the Inca Empire. It is also one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. The site was rediscovered by Yale archaeologist Hiram Bingham in 1911 and was declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983. At the site the primary buildings are the Intihuatana, the Temple of the Sun.

Cuzco

Cuzco also spelled as Cusco is in southeastern Peru, Cuzco is one of the most visited destinations in Peru and it is the historic capital of the Inca Empire, today Cuzco is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with well preserved colonial architecture, Cuzco is a beautiful city with rich history and culture. As Cuzco has a rich history hence it has some interesting museums as well like the Museo Municipal de Arte Contemporaneo, Museo Historico Regional, Museo de Arte Popular also there is La Merced Monastery which also has a decent museum. The walls of Cuzco city are Incan walls, many medium and large stones make up these Incan walls, the walls have different types of constructions at different places.

Lima

Lima is the capital of Peru and its largest city, the city was built on the banks of the River Rimac and Pacific Ocean, the city was founded in 1535 by the Spanish. Today Lima’s Historic Center is declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Center, due to the large number of artistic monuments found here. Lima has got a good climate, rich archaeological heritage, great natural beauty, great white beaches and more, all in all a great destination for travelers. Lima has some great museums which are great place to know more about the city and the country, the major ones being Museo de Oro del Peru or Peruvian Gold Museum (upstairs is the Arms Museum) , Museo de la Nacion (National Museum). Construction of Lima Cathedral begun on January 18, 1535, which was in modeled on Seville Cathedral in Spain in 1564 by architect Jeronimo de Aliaga. Also there are some great churches in Lima like the Baroque Church of San Francisco, La Merced and the Santo Domingo Church. There are many monuments in Lima of historic importance mansion and palaces like the Casa Aliaga, Casa de Pilatos, Palacio de Torre Tagle, Presidential Palace and more.

Arequipa

Arequipa is in southern Peru, the city was founded in 1540, the city is second most important city in Peru after Lima, the city is rich in culture and history also the historic centre of Arequipa was named a UNESCO world heritage site in the year 2000. The city is also nicknamed “The White City” as it has many colonial-era Spanish buildings built of sillar, a pearly white volcanic rock, the city of Arequipa is surrounded by fascinating villages and the snow-capped volcano El Misti. The Historical centre of Arequipa is a World Heritage Site declared so by UNESCO; the place has best architectural treasures including temples, other religious structures, colonial houses and more. Arequipa has a rich history hence has some quality museums like the Museo de Arte Virreinal, Archaeological Museum of the Santa Maria Catholic University, Archaeological Museum of the National University of San Agustín, Santury Museum and more. Arequipa is surrounded by great natural beauty great countryside and snow clad volcanic mountains; there are also the National Reserve Salinas and Aguada Blanca in route to Colca Valley.
