    Curepipe

Here is a town in an island nation that is the curiously named Curepipe of Mauritius and since, very few places have a totally apt name, and this one has the simplistic, straightforward one. The name is derived from the practice of settlers coming to the town to refill or ‘cure’ their pipes. The town is a center of the island’s tea business and also, the ship building industries. A whiff here and a flavor there of the colonial British town, are quite evident. With a locale in the Indian Ocean, it’s the 2nd largest town on the island. A haven of peace, it’s camouflaged by the green belt of forests and is home to six major rivers. The setting is perfect for being really close to nature and listening to its silent whispers.

    • Trou aux Cerfs: The place’s claim to fame is this extinct volcano. Stationed on the west coast, its picturesque view gives you a high. As you go clickety-click with your cameras, keep in mind that you are 605 meters above sea level. Natives like to take a jog and take in the fresh air, join them and don’t forget to send the beautiful picture with your postcard.
    • Jan Palach Bus Station: Hike a ride to anywhere in the town through this mode of transport. It’s the largest in the country with a traffic flow of 90,000 to 100,000 passengers per day. Squeeze in a place as you go vroom with the humid wind blowing in your face. It’s worth your ticket.
    • Botanical Garden: One more excuse to admire nature. The Botanical Garden is one of the marvelous places of the town. It sometimes gives you the sense of not being in the town. A different place with a different feeling, albeit in the same town is how one can describe the garden.
    • Churches: A place of solitude, a silent prayer for yourself, a link to your inner soul. The St. Therese church founded in 1869 and the St. Helene church are your perfect get-away from the maddening crowd.
    • Shopping: The town has the Monoprix-Prisunic supermarket. It has excellent places for shopping for items as handmade ship models, duty free jewellery, Indian silks and cottons, Chinese embroideries and handicraft, woolen jumpers and so on. Cure pipe is also the only town to accommodate a European-style casino
    • Royal College and the Carnegie Library: Take a peek in the oldest education center of the town – the Royal College. And, Carnegie loyalists rejoice as you visit the writer’s library. The trip will definitely, be enlightening as it opens the knowledge gates.
