What to see and what to do in Brazil?

Rio de Janeiro

Rio de Janeiro meaning ‘River of January’ is the second largest city of Brazil, it is also the former capital of Brazil, the city is world famous for it’s breathtaking landscape, it’s beaches and it’s annual carnival. Though Rio is one of the most wonderful cities on the planet it still has it’s share of problems like violence and crime rates but they are concentrated mostly in the slum areas better known as favelas. The city is served by the Galeão – Antônio Carlos Jobim International Airport also the city has two world’s largest forests inside the city namely Parque Estadual da Pedra Branca, or White Stone State Park and Floresta da Tijuca or ‘Tijuca Forest’.

Christ the Redeemer (Cristo)
Christ the Redeemer or the Cristo is the giant statue of Jesus atop Corcovado mountain in Rio de Janeiro, it has been named one of the New Seven Wonders of the World recently; the statue stands 38 meters (120 ft) tall previously one had to climb hundreds of steps, however today it is possible to use an elevator and escalator.

Beaches
Rio de Janeiro has some of the best beaches on the planet also it has a great beach culture, no it doesn’t have any topless beaches some of the best ones being Ramos, Flamengo, Leme, Copacabana, Leblon and Grumari.

Maracanã
Maracana is the largest football stadium in Rio, if you are a soccer fan then it is a great visit, once the stadium was the largest on Earth.

Sao Paulo

The city of São Paulo is the capital of State of São Paulo in Brazil. Sao Paulo is probably Brazil’s most modern and cosmopolitan city, it is also the main financial hub of the country. Sao Paulo has a great nightlife with great nightlife, restaurants and entertainment, some if the wealthiest people in Brazil live in Sao Paulo. For visitors Sao Paulo has attractions such as museums, monuments, markets, bars and more.

Liberdade
Liberdade is the ‘Japantown’ in Sao Paulo, it is actually the home to largest Japanese community outside Japan in the world, great to see fusion of Brazilian and Japanese culture, also there is a sizable number of Chinese and Koreans here.

Ibirapuera Park
Ibirapuera Park is quiet popular among the locals, it is a major urban park in Sao Paulo. Here the locals come for a leisure walk, jogging or walking, there are museums inside the park and free concerts are also held here periodically.

Museu de Arte de Sao Paulo
Museu de Arte de Sao Paulo is an art museum and a good visit if you are an art lover, the place has a good collection of Western art.

Brasilia

Brasilia, the capital city of Brazil was built between 1856 and 1960 during President Juscelino Kubitschek’s government. The city has plenty of open green space and fresh air. Brasilia is a singular city without doubt, it is different from other cities that are considered modern and planned. A visit to Brasilia is a chance to see and judge the great architectural work by the best designers, artists and architects.

Catedral Metropolitana
The Cathedral looks quite small from the outside but as you enter you realize that you are standing in one of the biggest and most spacious churches in the world. The church’s interior is bright with white marble walls and floors with an expanse of intricately stained glass overhead. Divine sculptures of angels are suspended from the ceiling and four statues of apostles stand just outside the cathedral.

TV Tower
The TV Tower offers the best view of the city and moreover it does not cost a penny. An elevator takes you 240 feet high and places the city at your feet. A fiery red Brazilian sunset is not to be missed. You can catch the best view of the Eixo monument and other ministry buildings from the TV Tower.

Espaco Luca Costa
Urban planner and architect, Luco Costa is the one who gave Brasilia its design and shape. The Espaco Luca Costa is a space, sunken beneath the surface of the square and contains the full model of the city of Brasilia. It is the second only to the TV Tower to catch a bird’s eye view of the city’s plan.

Memorial JK.
This remarkable monument was built as a tribute to the founder of Brasilia, Juscelino Kubitshek, in the year 1980.The President’s remains is placed on the second floor, beneath a skylight in a granite tomb. JK’s medals, suits and ribbons can also be found in this monument. Interesting stuff about Brasilia like old photographs taken during construction, rejected plans, etc makes the visit to this memorial worthwhile.

Palacio do Itamaraty
The Placio do Itamaraty now serves as the reception hall for the Foreign Affairs Department .It is the one of the most exquisite modern buildings with a landscape to match. Its interiors and exteriors compete with each other for the tourist’s attention. The ultra modern building has a lot of open space. Antique artifacts, Persian rugs, intricately carved furniture and 18th century paintings give the structure a majestic look.

Lake Paranoa
Rio Paranoa has been dammed to form a large, beautiful lake .The lake is on the east side of the city. The Olympic center, Palace of the Dawn, embassies, consulates, sports clubs, restaurants, and the official residence of the president and many other important buildings surround the lake.
